Aidsfonds welcomes the new UNAIDS Global AIDS Strategy and its focus on empowering communities to end inequalities

The past year has been difficult for communities around the world, with inequalities that drive the HIV epidemic, including violation of human rights, stigma and discrimination, increasing under the pressure of restrictive policies and laws. Such inequalities have further been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has produced an unprecedented crisis intersecting with and exacerbating the global HIV epidemic.
The adoption this 25th of March, 2021, of the Global AIDS Strategy 2021–2026 “End Inequalities, End AIDS” by the Programme Coordinating Board of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) sends a much-needed signal of hope to communities and countries most left behind in the AIDS response.

The Strategy´s focus on supporting community-, key population-and women-led interventions, while addressing punitive legal and policy environments and supporting people-centred health systems and social protection schemes, represents a transformative shift able to put the world back on track to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Aidsfonds will play its part in mobilising communities to meaningfully engage in the process of the High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, advocate their leaders to recommit to a fully funded and efficient AIDS response and hold them to account to achieve the 2030 goal.
