At the dawn of this new century, the countries of the world agreed on a set of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—ambitious and inspired statements of our global commitment to end extreme poverty and meet the needs of
the world’s poorest. Improving women’s and children’s health and well-being—and in particular dramatically reducing millions of their preventable and needless deaths—stood at the centre of the framework, as the fourth and fifth of the eight MDGs. The deadline for achieving the goals was set for the end of 2015—exactly 18 months from today.
