47,000 deaths occur each year as a result of unsafe abortions, with 40% of unsafe abortions occurring in women under 24 years of age. Worldwide, young women under the age of 20 make up 70% of all hospitalisations resulting from unsafe abortion complications. Young women aged 15 to 19 are estimated to have 2.5 million of the approximately 19 million unsafe abortions that occur annually in the developing world.

In light of these overwhelming statistics, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that they represent the stories of individual young women seeking to make decisions about their lives when faced with unplanned pregnancies. IPPF is here to support each and every young woman faced with unplanned pregnancy, no matter which decision she makes.

IPPF’s Youth and Abortion: Key strategies and promising practices for increasing young women’s access to abortion services is a guidance document drawing on the experiences of clients, health professionals and technical experts at the national, regional and international levels of the Federation.

Whether you are a young advocate, a health professional, a policy-maker, an outreach worker, a programme coordinator, an executive director, or a volunteer – this document will support you in your efforts to increase young women’s and girls’ access to safe abortion services.
