Webinar – Empowering frontline maternal health workers for better mental health outcomes for adolescent and adult mothers

Engage with healthcare professionals in Nigeria who are coming together to disseminate research on perinatal depression. Depression is quite common in women in the perinatal period. However, maternal and child healthcare services often do not make any provision to meet the mental health needs of women in the perinatal period. Effective treatment for perinatal depression can be delivered by frontline primary health care providers but what is required for successful integration of maternal mental health care to routine perinatal care is yet to be determined. In a series of studies, the Ibadan Research Team on the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa explored what is needed to empower frontline primary health care workers in Oyo State to scale up care for perinatal depression through improved identification and provision of evidence-based treatment to both adult and adolescent mothers.
