Welcoming Carys Stirling: Share-Net International\’s New Intern!

We are super excited to have a new addition to our Share-Net team! Carys Stirling has joined our team a Share-Net International Intern! Below is a short piece written by Carys to introduce herself.
Who am I?
Hello! I’m Carys, and I’m doing my internship at Share-Net International as part of my Master’s in Social Policy and Public Health. I moved to the Netherlands in August 2019, but originally I’m from a small city in Scotland called Dundee.
What did I do in the past?
Last year I graduated with an M.A. in Human Geography from St Andrews University, where I particularly focused on queer and feminist methods and perspectives. There, I was part of student-led initiative “Got Consent?”, delivering bystander intervention workshops to students to tackle gender-based violence on campus. It was this, in combination with studying the geographies of HIV/AIDS, that inspired me to pursue public health for my Master’s. When I came to the Netherlands, my interests in gender equality and SRHR led me to the Amsterdam-based organization CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, where I am now a Youth Advocate, and through this I discovered Share-Net. I’m delighted to now be part of the team.
What I am doing here?
During the coming five years, Share-Net International will work towards establishing stronger linkages between SRHR and youth empowerment. This involves investing in integrating youth empowerment in the five Share-Net International knowledge pathways and establishing stronger linkages with other networks and organisations working on youth empowerment. The purpose of my internship is to further explore and deepen SNI’s understanding of the interlinkages and complementarity between SRHR and youth empowerment, to inform how joint programming can be done in practice.
What am I expecting?
I’m excited to put my critical analytical skills to use in a practical way, to learn from like-minded colleagues and to gain an understanding of Share-Net’s methods for bridging the much lamented gaps between research, policy and practice.
Out of the office?
When I’m not studying or working I can be found cooking, eating, running, listening to disco music or attempting (usually unsuccessfully) to befriend every cat I meet.
