Putting the C in CSE – Standards for content, delivery and environment of CSE

Comprehensive Sexuality Education Programme Standards

A suite of materials outlining Plan International’s comprehensive sexuality education programme standards. These standards comprise a comprehensive, human rights-based, sex-positive, gender transformative and inclusive approach towards sex and relationships for children and young people, from early childhood to adulthood.

Plan International believes that all children, adolescents and young people are entitled to comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) to gain knowledge, explore values and attitudes, and develop the skills they need – without fear or discrimination – to make conscious, healthy and respectful choices about relationships and sexuality.

Delivering and supporting positive sexuality education is a new, core component of our SRHR programming. This means that prioritising interventions in sexuality education is critical and will increasingly be part of Plan International’s programmes and projects.

To support Plan International and partner staff, educators and implementers in formal and non-formal settings to deliver effective and quality CSE, we have developed a series of 14 CSE programme standards. These standards are based upon international evidence and good practice.  Our standards-based approach aims to provide practical support to strengthen comprehensive programming in three dimensions: Content, Delivery, Enabling Environment. The dimensions are inter-connected and the ideal scenario is that we work on all standards as a whole. However, we recognise that the journey to comprehensive sexuality education can be challenging, and requires relevance to the context and opportunities that we have.

Plan International has begun implementation of our materials in 2020, and considers these are ‘live’ documents that we will continually improve through learning. If you have questions or would like to share feedback on these resources please contact:  SRHR@plan-international.org

French and Spanish resources will be uploaded in January 2021. Please check back then!
