Share-Net, in collaboration with Amref Flying Doctors, CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, Rutgers and Simavi, organised a preparation meeting regarding the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, which was held in the Humanity House in The Hague.

2019 is the 25th anniversary of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) which was held in Cairo, where 179 global governments adopted a Programme of Action, which was ground-breaking with regards to women’s rights and their sexual and reproductive health and rights. On the 12th-14th of November 2019, the Government of Kenya, the Government of Denmark and UNFPA are convening the ICPD25 Nairobi Summit, a high-level Summit to mobilise political will and financial commitments to implement the unfinished business of the ICPD Programme of Action.

The Nairobi Summit is not a UN conference; it is a global summit, which aims to address, engage and re-energise all stakeholders who play a role in the achieving of the 1994 ICPD commitments. The goal of the summit is to push for further implementation, especially the ‘unfinished business’ of the ICPD PoA such as the issues which have been left behind (access to safe abortion amongst others). The outcome of the Summit will be a set of global commitments. Countries are requested to formulate specific national commitments focused on the implementation of the ICPD, to be presented in Nairobi. The conference will offer an inclusive platform, bringing together governments, UN agencies, civil society, private sector organizations, women’s groups and youth networks to discuss and agree on actions to meet this important goal.

The Nairobi Summit will focus on the 3 zeros: zero unmet need for family planning information and services, zero preventable maternal deaths, zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices against women and girls. The themes of the Summit are centred around universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights as a part of universal health coverage, financing required to complete the ICPD Programme of Action, and to sustain the gains made, drawing on demographic diversity to drive economic growth and achieve sustainable development, ending gender-based violence and harmful practices and upholding the right to sexual and reproductive health care in humanitarian and fragile contexts.
